Poplar Hill Plantation

Of

Jefferson County, Mississippi

The Jackson Riley Families owned and farmed this land.  The plantation is located on Highway 28 down the road from Poplar Hill AME Church, Poplar Hill Grade School, and the Poplar Hill Cemetery.  This photo depicts the meadow just down the hill from the house where Delaney and Easter raised their 15 children.  A one room house with a brick fireplace the one room still stands within the current structure.  On this land is buried both Easter and Delaney in a small family cemetery on the far northeastern corner of the property.  The first land which Delaney Jackson owned was a gift of 40 acres given to Delaney by Mrs. Medora Dubs Scott Butler  in April 1868.  Delaney and his sons continued to purchase land once in 1879 and then again in 1893.  However, the first 40 acres is where the house and farm are currently located.  Our gratitude and thanksgiving to the Theodore B. Jackson’s who continued to farm and maintain the family homestead even to this day.
